How to Make a Small Fondant Crown

A princess crown cake.

A princess crown cake with a gumpaste crown is a perfect cake for a little princess. I created this watercolor effect with petal dust and made this gumpaste tiara without any molds. It was so easy I had to make a video to show you how.

I recently made this cake for a little girls 6th birthday celebration. The mother said she wanted a princess theme cake but not really a princess doll cake. So I decided to make her an edible princess crown and gave it a little whimsical watercolor effect cake in pink and peach.

Which girl doesn't love pink, pearls, cameo, ruffles, and of course a crown? Needless to say, she loved it !!!

I've been wanting to make a few basic videos especially for the beginners out there. I thought this would be a great addition.

The videos do not cover the basics on how to buttercream or ganache the cake and get sharp edges on fondant.  I have shared these separately on the blog.

  • How to get sharp edges on Buttercream Cakes
  • How to get share edges on Ganache Cakes

So I made two videos - Gum Paste Princess Crown and Cake

  • In the first video which is in the recipe card below, I've have shown you now I make a gum paste tiara or princess crown without any molds and
  • In this second video, I show you how I created the cake, watercolor effect, cameo, pearls, ruffles, painting, etc.

  • Let the gumpaste crown dry for at least 8 hours
  • When dried use melted chocolate to place some pearl dragees

Bake and frost the cake

  • Bake the cake and cool completely
  • Torte and layer the cakes with buttercream. Chill the cake for 20 minutes
  • Frost the outside with ganache and smooth with a spatula and bench scraper
  • Cover the cake with fondant - let dry for at least 8 hours.

Create the watercolor effect

  • As shown in the video create a watercolor effect using various petal dust, a fluffy brush and a piece of sponge
  • Create the fondant plaque and fondant cameo
  • Create the border - fondant frill with beads - paint the beads with metallic gold
  • Then create the fondant pearls
  • Dust the pearl with pearl dust powder
